What is the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society?

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) is a professional society within the IEEE that focuses on computational intelligence, a collection of biologically and linguistically motivated computational paradigms. These include the theory, design, application, and development of neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems.

Originally known as the IEEE Neural Network Council, the society changed its name to the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society to reflect the inclusion of fuzzy systems and evolutionary computation paradigms along with neural networks. This change was formally approved by the IEEE Board of Directors in February 2004.

The society sponsors various conferences, including the bi-annual IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence, and publishes a range of transactions and magazines. Some of the publications include the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems.

The society also provides scholarships for deserving undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students who need financial support to carry out their research during an academic break period. It offers membership at a reduced dues rate for individuals who reside in developing countries.

The society is governed by its Constitution, Bylaws, and Operations Manual, and its activities are organized and managed by various committees. The society has a strategic planning committee with members from various universities and institutions around the world.
