What is the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society?

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) is a professional society within the IEEE that focuses on computational intelligence, a collection of biologically and linguistically motivated computational paradigms. These include the theory, design, application, and development of neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems.

The society traces its roots to the IEEE Neural Networks Council, which was later renamed the IEEE Neural Networks Society before adopting its current name, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, to reflect the broader inclusion of fuzzy systems and evolutionary computation alongside neural networks.

The society sponsors conferences such as the IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI), held biennially, and the International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games (CIG). It also publishes several journals, including IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems.

The society provides scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students who need financial support to carry out research, and it offers membership at a reduced dues rate for individuals who reside in developing countries.

The society is governed by its Constitution, Bylaws, and Operations Manual, and its activities are organized and managed by various committees, including a strategic planning committee with members from universities and institutions around the world.
