What is Hallucination (AI)?

AI hallucination is a phenomenon where large language models (LLMs), such as generative AI chatbots or computer vision tools, generate outputs that are nonsensical, unfaithful to the source content, or altogether inaccurate. These outputs are not based on the training data, are incorrectly decoded by the transformer, or do not follow any identifiable pattern.

The term "AI hallucination" gained prominence around 2022 with the rollout of large language models like ChatGPT, and by 2023, it was considered a significant issue in LLM technology. The term was initially used in the context of AI in 2000 and later popularized by Google DeepMind researchers in 2018.

AI hallucinations can occur due to a variety of factors, including insufficient, outdated, or low-quality training data, incorrect assumptions made by the model, or biases in the data used to train the model. For instance, if an AI model is trained on a dataset comprising biased or unrepresentative data, it may hallucinate patterns or features that reflect these biases.

AI hallucinations can take many forms, such as incorrect predictions, false positives, and false negatives. For example, an AI model used to predict the weather may incorrectly forecast rain when there is no such likelihood, or a model used to detect fraud may falsely flag a legitimate transaction as fraudulent.

AI hallucinations can lead to several issues, including the spread of misinformation, lowered user trust, and potentially harmful consequences if taken at face value. For instance, if a hallucinating news bot responds to queries about a developing emergency with information that hasn't been verified, it can quickly spread falsehoods that undermine mitigation efforts.

Despite these challenges, AI hallucinations are an active area of research, and efforts are being made to mitigate their occurrence and impact. Some of the proposed solutions include using more representative and high-quality training data, making fewer assumptions in the model, and implementing robust validation and testing procedures.

How can AI hallucinations be prevented?

To prevent AI hallucinations, several strategies can be employed:

  1. Diverse and High-Quality Training Data — Ensure that AI models are trained on diverse, balanced, and well-structured data to prevent biases and inaccuracies.

  2. Adversarial Training — Introduce adversarial examples during training to help the model learn to handle challenging inputs and reduce the likelihood of hallucinations.

  3. Prompt Engineering — Craft clear and precise prompts to reduce ambiguity and avoid scenarios that could confuse the AI, thus minimizing the risk of hallucinations.

  4. Model Architecture Adjustments — Modify the model architecture to reduce complexity, which may help in minimizing hallucinations.

  5. Human Oversight — Incorporate human review and feedback to identify and correct hallucinatory or misleading outputs.

  6. Regular Model Validation and Testing — Implement robust validation and testing procedures to ensure the model's performance against new and unseen data.

  7. Avoiding Impossible Scenarios — Use practical and real scenarios in prompts to prevent the AI from generating implausible outputs.

  8. Data Cleaning and Preprocessing — Ensure that the training data is clean and accurately labeled to prevent the model from learning incorrect patterns.

  9. Continuous Monitoring — Regularly monitor the model's outputs and adjust as necessary to maintain accuracy and relevance.

  10. Retrieval-Augmented Generation — Use techniques like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to enhance the model's ability to generate accurate and relevant outputs.

By implementing these strategies, the occurrence of AI hallucinations can be significantly reduced, leading to more reliable and trustworthy AI systems.
